I am no longer overwhelmed and disconsolate
remembering the folly of my youth,
when I clothed myself in the traditional husks
and feared the Spirit of Truth.
I marvel that You were so attentive
when I finally opened up to pray.
You drew near and Your presence surrounded me,
though there was nothing meaningful I could say.
For it was Your Life as my life,
and the more I saw of You, the less I saw of me.
Yet, You were persistently patient
when my choices were of the earth, so earthy.
A lifetime later I can extol by the Spirit of Truth in me:
"Thank You for the storms and fires You sent
to draw me, to drive me to die to all but Thee,"
where Love is a perpetual River of Life flowing unceasingly.
